With the successful of the Kansas-Nebraska Bill of 1854, an act that stopped the terms in the Missouri Compromise and allowed slave agreement in 1820 between pro-slavery and anti-slavery in the United States; concerning the extension of slavery into new territories. By February 1854, anti-slavery Whigs had begun meeting in the upper Midwestern states to discuss the formation of a new party. One such meeting, in Wisconsin on March 20, 1854, is generally remembered as the founding meeting of the Republican Party, calling for the organization of a new political party. The Republicans were originally composed mainly of Northerners from both major political parties, democrats and the Whigs (Whigs considered the second party from 1830-1950). The first political party convention was held in 1854 in Ripon Wisconsin. Republicans were united by their opposition to the expansion of slavery.
